Text Talk Bookmarks
Support students in having a text talk. Create a bookmark for each student to hold and help them discuss what you have read to them or they have read. Make 3-5 questions with each question followed by a sentence starter or sentence frame to help them answer the question. (See the lower and upper grade examples to the right.) Model how to ask and answer the questions using the bookmarks and the text with a student volunteer or two student volunteers. Pair students and be sure to pair English learners with bilingual students or English models. Pairs choose an asker and a answerer. They complete the questions and sentence starters on the bookmark and then switch roles. Circulate clarifying, modeling language, and directing students to the text as needed.
