How can I use it in my course?

Preservice and inservice teachers are hungry for their university coursework to directly apply to their future or current classroom.  Often, they feel that it is difficult to bridge the gap between theory and practice.  Add this book to your course texts as a tool for teachers to apply what they are learning through careful analysis of the classroom ready lists of strategies, ideas, and reference tools.  For example, assign students:

  • choose 5 lists (e.g. American idioms, easy homophones, mathematics vocabulary, nonreversible pairs, and the consonant production chart) and determine how they could be used to assist beginning, intermediate, and advanced speakers of English
  • choose a list and create a lesson plan that shows you understand BICS vs. CALP
  • using the lists on cognates and course lecture notes, explain, in one page, how you will teach cognates in your classroom
  • using the conversation starters list, create a differentiated lesson plan for students at WIDA levels 1 (3 students), 3 (20 students), and 5 (5 students).
  • etc.
